Wayne Scriber Chosen President

Leonardtown, November 19 - In a decisive vote (23-15), local members elected retired Maryland trooper Wayne Scriber to head the St. Mary's County Branch of the NAACP. Scriber will be sworn into office in January and his two-year term will expire December 2010.

Other officers elected include Rose Frederick for First Vice President and George Brown for Assitant Treasurer. Offices not filled during the election will be filled by the new administration in January. If you are interested, contact us at 301-863-3011. Members also elected five to the Executive Committee: Alonzo Gaskin, Samuel Taylor, Elsie Lawrence, Agnes Fenwick, and Laurice White.

The monthly meeting of the St. Mary's County Branch of the NAACP is held on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the meeting room at SMECO Building in Leonardtown (on Hollywood Road). Please come and share your thoughts and experience -- and bring a friend.

Governor Signs Expanded Medical Coverage Bill

Last winter, Governor O'Mally signed into las Senate Bill 6 Working Families and Small Business Health Coverage Act, which expands Medical Assistance eligibility to parents with dependent children and other families caring for children with incomes up to 116% of the Federal Poverty Level or about $20,500 annually for a family of three. Memorandum of Understanding


Sheriff Tim Cameron and St. Mary's NAACP President William "Nace" Bowman sign the Memorandum of Understanding while Tim Johnson of the Department of Justice Community Relations Services looks on.

In an effort to build a legacy of mutual cooperation and concern, the St. Mary's County NAACP and the St. Mary's County Sheriff Office enter into this Memorandumo of Understanding(MOU).       Read the Entire MOU

 

 

NAACP Wins Heritage Recognitions

On April 5, 2006, the St. Mary's County Board of Education in collaboration with the local Branch of the NAACP held a dedication ceremony in order to recognize significant contributions made by African Americans to the public schools.    Read More
